Birds’ sounds repository launched

Researchers from the Acoustics Institute at Universidad Austral de Chile have launched a web repository featuring a collection of bird sounds from the wetlands of Valdivia.

This educational tool is part of the work developed by the research team of the Soundlapse project (Fondecyt regular No. 1220320), led by Dr. Felipe Otondo, professor and Director of the Acoustics Institute.

The repository provides access to a collection of bird sound recordings, including simple descriptions focused on their acoustic and musical characteristics.

The purpose of this application is to offer support material for primary school teachers and to serve as the central element of sensory workshops to be held during the second semester of 2024, noted Dr. Felipe Otondo.

These workshops, the professor explains, are based on creative learning strategies and the use of soundscape recordings. The proposed activities include immersive concerts, field laboratories, sound walks, and virtual environment design workshops. The results aim to contribute to soundscape research, promoting the conservation of natural sound heritage and biodiversity in southern Chile, by integrating creative processes, advanced technology, and environmental education.

The professor added that the foundational material for this project was developed in collaboration with Paula Marín and Gabriel Morales, while Carlos Knopel created the web environment. All the photos used on the portal are original and were taken by Chilean photographers specializing in birds.
