Biography

He studied acoustics in Chile, where he began composing and performing music for experimental theatre and collaborated on several performance projects with actors and musicians. In 1999, he moved to Denmark for postgraduate studies in sound perception at Aalborg University, focusing on spatial sound and timbre perception. He later studied composition at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music under Anders Brødsgaard, where he composed, performed, and participated in interdisciplinary projects with visual artists.

For several years, he worked as a research fellow in the Acoustic Technology group at the Technical University of Denmark, contributing to projects on the directional characteristics of musical instruments for room auralisation, in collaboration with IRCAM’s musical acoustics team. In 2005, he pursued further studies in composition at the University of York with Ambrose Field and Roger Marsh, specialising in electroacoustic composition and music theatre. From 2006 to 2008, he lectured at Leeds College of Music and the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, teaching courses in composition and music technology. In 2008, he joined the Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts at Lancaster University, where he taught undergraduate and postgraduate music courses until 2014.

His compositions have been performed at festivals and events in 38 countries across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. He has received several accolades, including first prizes at the 2008 Città di Udine International Composition Competition, the 2012 Radio France International Quartz Prize, the 2013 Musica Nova competition in Prague, the 2016 Città di Udine competition in Italy and SYNC2026 in Russia. He collaborated with Neil Sorrell on the BAFTA-winning radio play The Glass Man, commissioned by BBC Radio 4, and received the Avonni Chilean National Innovation Award in 2019. His research has been published in Organised Sound, Computer Music Journal, Acta Acustica, Digital Creativity, Applied Sciences and Leonardo.

Felipe is currently Professor at the Universidad Austral de Chile, where he leads the Soundlapse research project, a large-scale interdisciplinary collaboration exploring wetland soundscapes in Valdivia, funded by the Chilean National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) under FONDECYT grants 1190722, 1220320 and 1250388. He is also co-founder and director of the Arts and Technology Lab at the 14k Research and Innovation Centre.

His current research interests include 3D audio, acoustic ecology and environmental education through sensory experience. His music is released on the British label Sargasso.
